CHALLENGE & SOLUTION

Challenge: The project required a delicate balance: delivering a safer, more durable structure without compromising the natural character of the dam and its surrounding environment. The existing boardwalk had deteriorated due to constant exposure to water and weather, creating safety risks for visitors. However, any upgrade needed to minimise visual impact and integrate seamlessly into the landscape. Adding to the complexity, much of the work had to be undertaken over water, with limited access and strict safety requirements, all while ensuring the site remained as undisturbed as possible.

Solution: Hundreds of metres of decking boards and joists were removed and replaced with purpose-built marine-grade timber and stainless-steel fixings, ensuring long-term strength and resilience in a harsh environment. Much of the work was carried out over water, requiring our team to operate from boats, on static lines, and in life jackets to maintain the highest safety standards. The galvanized handrail was replaced with a custom 40mm square aluminium balustrade, creating a safe, non-climbable barrier that will serve visitors for many years to come.
